Gregory Thaumaturgus

Gregory Thaumaturgus
(c. 213–c. 270)
   Saint, Bishop, Theologian and Missionary.
Gregory was a pupil of origen in Caesarea and had trained as a lawyer. In c. 238, he was consecrated Bishop of Neocaesarea in Pontus. There are many legends about his miracles – hence his title Thaumaturgus (‘wonder worker’). He believed that pagan learning could be used to promote Christianity, he turned traditional pagan festivals into Christian holidays and he was highly successful in bringing the pagan population of his diocese to the Church. He was the author of a treatise on the Trinity and a semiautobiographical account of the teachings of Origen. During his time as Bishop, he combated the heresy of paul of samosata and he witnessed the devastation of Pontus by the Goths. His biography was written by Gregory of nyssa, whose grandmother, St Macrina the elder, was one of his students.
